Why should you register for our pasture workshop on September 10th?

Three GREAT reasons (not including the free lunch!)

1) Sarah Flack, expert grazier and author of The Art and Science of Grazing, will be here from Vermont and will be leading the day. The morning will be a classroom-style session indoors where we’ll be discussing the basics of grazing, plant physiology and livestock grazing nutrition. The afternoon will be spent in the pasture looking at cows, soil, plants, and fencing infrastructure. Sarah’s teaching style is practical, hands on and approachable, and she has over 30 years of experience as a farm business planning consultant who specializes in grass and grazing. There will be lots of opportunities for discussion so bring your questions! There will be a recorded webinar with Sarah available on our YouTube account if you want to brush up on the basics of rotational grazing in advance. This in-person session will be applicable to anyone with grazing livestock, but especially beef, small ruminants and dairy.

2) We also have Al Loureiro from the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture joining to talk about the results of the Living Labs Land Swap project. This multi-year project integrated grazing livestock onto cropland with the goal of improving soil health in Nova Scotia. These projects were conducted on real farms, as opposed to research plots.

3) The host farm is trying out Gallagher E-collars on beef cows for the first time this year. E-collars are a new technology to Nova Scotia and are an exciting development in the rotational grazing sphere. E-collars allow for internal fencing to be replaced by virtual fencing, making cattle moves through your rotation easier by saving time and labour. If you have been wondering how this technology works in a Nova Scotia setting, here is an opportunity to see firsthand and ask questions.

This event will be held at Round Barn Farm in Old Barns, ten minutes outside of Truro. The event starts at 10am and runs until 4pm. There will be a lunch provided – registration is required by Sept 3rd to ensure any special dietary requirements are met. We hope to see you there!
